away - but not far...
Kerkenstein is a historic mayor's house, built in 1841 in the town of Herwijnen, the Netherlands. It is available to whoever wants to get away from big cities, wants clean air, likes biking long and flat roads or making music, writing poetry - a good glass of wine. Come!
Welcome!
Hidden behind two old chestnut trees we welcome you in our Government monument Kerkenstein. This used to be the town’s mayor home in de heart of the village Herwijnen. Along the river ‘Waal’ this has been our ‘family home’ for 25 years.
Stork nests, orchards and grazing cows quickly give our guests the feeling to be away from the busy city. Many old and beautiful cities are close by. -Den Bosch (30 min. by car), Utrecht (30), Breda (30), Roterdam (40), and Amsterdam (55).
In the direct vicinity some great sights are easy to travel to by bike starting from the house: Fort Asperen, Fort Vuren, Castle of Loevestein, the Glass-museum in Leerdam.
Going for a run in the polder, along the lengthy embankments can be rewarded by our sauna or steam shower. With a cup of fresh coffee in the kitchen garden, you can read the newspaper, play piano in the music room or mow our lawn if you feel like it.
Behind the house in the back yard is a large embankment. When you stand there you can see the floodplains and beyond it the river Waal. So, make beautiful hikes, paddle, dream or lounge.
